We cook over 900 meals every week to distribute to people facing food insecurity and homelessness

Cooking for the Homeless

With the onset of covid, Fishers of Men stopped having public meetings until it was safe to do so, instead, our team began cooking food for people in need and taking it to them – to parks in Logan and the city, and places where people were shut in and in need. Prior to covid, we were cooking 60 meals on a Sunday night and 40 meals on a Weds night.  Post covid, this grew to 420 meals on Sundays, and 350 meals on Wednesdays. Currently, we send out approximately 900 meals every week on our various food van teams.

The men in our Freedom from Addiction program help with preparing and cooking the food that we send out with the Food Vans. This is one way that these men are learning how to contribute rather than simply taking from society.

FOM is also registered with SPER, so people who are finding it difficult to pay their fines, can come and help us prepare vegetables while working off their fines.

Cooking Times

We cook for the homeless all year except from Christmas through January. There are three days that we prepare food every week: Tuesday, Wednesday, and Sunday.

Tuesdays from 10am - 5pm

On Tuesdays from 10am – 5pm, we prepare the vegetables, and sometimes the meat that we will use in our meals on Wednesday and Sunday.

Wednesdays 10am - 5pm

On Wednesdays 10am – 5pm, we cook approximately 400 meals to send out hot on our Logan and Brisbane City Food Vans.

Sundays 10am - 5pm

On Sundays 10am – 5pm, we cook over 400 meals to send out on our Logan, Brisbane City, and Kids Run food van teams.

We welcome anyone who would like to volunteer some time to help the production of these meals or the preparation of the Food Vans.

Food Collection

Our team collects donated, purchased, and salvaged food most days of the week. Every month FOM collects an average of four tonnes of food, which we use for our meals, and our food parcels. We collect salvaged food from Secondbite, Foodbank, other local businesses, and private citizens.

We welcome anybody who is interested in volunteering their time to help us collect and sort our food donations.
